Superfast Birthday = Best Husband Ever

My birthday was on Sunday, but it extended through today with a box of books that Superfast Husband bought for me! Check out this tantalizing list of books–I don’t know what to read first (after I finish The Fionavar Tapestry)! The Axe, Volume 1 of The Master of Hestviken and Gunnar’s Daughter by Sigrid Undset Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder Dreamsongs by George RR Martin Come Along with Me and Just An Ordinary Day by Shirley Jackson And…

Answers–13 Opening Lines–How Many Can You Guess?

I mentioned that I had to go on maternity leave for my reading jobs, so my On Reading posts will no longer mean that I read a book for work. I could be a stickler for consistency and just stop doing them, but they’re just too much fun–especially when I catch the fever for a really great meme like the one accidentally started by the Accidental Novelist, and picked up by Poodlerat. Here are 13 opening lines (or two) to books that are beloved by…

2 Kinds of Readers

My work read tonight wasn’t great, but at least it was quick. The two readers in the title of this post are me and one of you. So, with permission, I’m sharing this lovely email I received from TG in Ireland: Thank you so much for your posts and for sharing your devotion to reading with us! Reading your posts everyday has re-aligned my own passion for reading, and now I’m experiencing so much more joy from it! It’s great to get reviews from someone…

A Basket of Books for Baby!

I had baby showers last weekend and this weekend, and since everybody knows I’m a reader, I got a ton of books for Superfast Baby. In fact, the theme of the shower my mom & my high school friend threw was “books” and everybody brought a book to put in this really cute basket. Plus, my best friend from college, who is also a huge reader plus has an MA in Children’s Literature, made me a list of books that she and her kids really…

Books In Movies

No, not books TO movies, books IN movies, used as props or set dressing. Whenever I see a character reading, I want to know what they’re reading. All too often you can’t tell, but when you can, it’s usually informative. The AMC series “Mad Men” has had some fun book cameos. Set in the 1960s New York City advertising world, the show consciously references books and films of the time. I noticed in the first episode that the main office set appeared to be an…

Some Changes Under the Hood

I upgraded to WordPress 2.3 this morning, and after a few hours of hacking I think I managed to get everything up and running smoothly. If you’re interested: You’ll now find tags at the bottom of each post, instead of at the top. I am still using Categories as a section in the sidebar. I use these for Genre, Century, and Author’s Nationality. The tags have individual authors, titles for trilogies and series, and some quirky, intuitively created classifications that could be fun to browse.…

Eaten by the Monster of Mooch

Thanks largely to BookMooch, I have accumulated quite a massive TBR stack, which I thought I’d share with you in honor of the book I read for work today, which was a good story but just made me want to reread Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. But no re-reading for Superfast anytime soon… If you’ve read any of these books, please tell me if it was love or hate! I really need help figuring out what to read next. The List:

Call Me Dany

Your Score: House Targaryen 72% Dominant, 54% Extroverted, 72% Trustworthy Ancient. Noble. Passionate to the point of insanity. Transcending lesser beings, you are of House Targaryen. You are a dominant personality—in fact, you are the most dominant of all eight house types. You will not suffer yourself to be ignored. You will not suffer yourself to be ruled. The phrase “I will not suffer myself to _____!” was practically made for you. You are willful, arrogant, and exceedingly dangerous to screw with. With a temper…

Indoctrination (Booking Through Thursday)

I’m a few days late with this but I loved the question, and decided to use it after finishing a work read about a rather lonely little girl. When growing up did your family share your love of books? If so, did one person get you into reading? And, do you have any family-oriented memories with books and reading? (Family trips to bookstore, reading the same book as a sibling or parent, etc.)
