ALA’s Home Library Suggestions for Families

Need help knowing what books to buy for your kids? The American Library Association wants to help: The ALA-Children’s Book Council (CBC) Joint Committee, with cooperation from the ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee, has created the four bibliographies below, “Building a Home Library,” to provide guidance to parents, grandparents, and others interested in assembling a high-quality library for their children at home. The lists are sort of skimpy; this wouldn’t be much of a library. And it skews heavily towards commercially popular books from the last…

Live and In Person (Booking through Thursday)

This week’s questions: * Have you ever met one of your favorite authors? Gotten their autograph? * How about an author you felt only so-so about, but got their autograph anyway? Head over to A Shelf Life for a chance to win a book that is too scary-sounding for me–not in a Stephen King kind of way, but in an environmental catastrophe kind of way. It appears I didn’t read very much in September, at least not for pleasure. I read a ton for work, and that didn’t leave me much time for relaxing with a book in hand. My favorite reads this month were Auralia’s Colors (in case you haven’t guessed) and the biography of Shirley Jackson. The Top Five Most Popular Posts in September: As Madeleine Put It–a great loss. Contest! Win a Free Book!! Comfort Food (Booking Through Thursday) Eaten By the Monster of Mooch–seems to be…
