Another Literary Meme

Found via Rhigirl— 1. When/how did you become an avid reader? I’ve loved to read as long as I can remember, ever since I was a little girl. I was totally the bookworm nerd that never wanted to do anything else. 2. What is your favorite genre for adult/young adult books? For YA, I am always a sucker for a good coming-of-age story. For adult books, well, obviously I am a huge fan of epic fantasy, but I also like a good crime novel. And…

You Know I Love Libraries

I picked up this library meme from So Many Books. Of course, Library Lovers month ended on Friday but my heart is filled with library love year round, so get over it. How do you plan on celebrating Library Lovers month? I did nothing to celebrate. It’s all I can do to get a daily shower. I was actually going to go to the library two weeks ago. Superfast Baby and I went to Brooklyn to visit a friend and her two kids, and they…

Format (Booking Through Thursday)

All other things (like price and storage space) being equal, given a choice in a perfect world, would you rather have paperbacks in your library? Or hardcovers? And why? I prefer trade edition paperbacks, for the most part, because I do a lot of my reading on the subway, and hardcovers get really heavy and unwieldy. They’re also better for reading in bed, especially when they have to rest on a pregnant belly! I also tend to prefer the way that trade paperbacks look, mainly…

Non Fiction Meme

I’m late getting to Gautami’s Non Fiction Meme. * a) What issues/topic interests you most in non-fiction, i.e, cooking, knitting, stitching, there are infinite topics that have nothing to do with novels? Books about food, books that explain scientific topics for general readers, biography, memoir, history, travelogues. I love reading books about my hobbies, particularly knitting and cooking. My library is filled with books of film history, criticism, and theory. I like some books on Christianity by authors like CS Lewis and Dan Allender. Lately…

After the Honeymoon (Booking Through Thursday)

Here’s something for Valentine’s Day. Have you ever fallen out of love with a favorite author? Was the last book you read by the author so bad, you broke up with them and haven’t read their work since? Could they ever lure you back? In college and for a time afterwards, I was obsessed with Umberto Eco’s Foucault’s Pendulum. I must have read it at least 8 times. I read Eco’s other works, including his semiotics, and would have considered him a favorite author. A…

123 Meme

The kind and well-read Walrus tagged me for the 123 meme. Thank you! I’m currently reading Renegade’s Magic by Robin Hobb, which is sitting at the top of the stack next to my nursing glider. Also in the stack: The Axe by Sigrid Undset, the New King James Bible (not that I have bothered to read it lately), and Lose Your Mummy Tummy. “Let me be forgotten by them. And what did I hope for myself? Hope. It seemed a bitter word now.” Here are…

Making My Day

I made Bybee’s day (thanks!!) so here are 10 people who made my day recently: Sheila, for blogging a Real Housewives conversation I wish I’d been a part of. YA author extraordinaire Laurie Halse Anderson, for running to raise money to fight leukemia and lymphoma. Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist for my free book. Eva for such a fabulous meme. The other 6 aren’t bloggers (nor are they individuals), but I’m just so happy for all of them: Judy & Mako’s son & new fiancee Catherine and…

More Library Dreaming

I posted this today to a community mailing list, in an exchange sparked by the observation that there are no bookstores within walking distance of our large, densely populated urban neighborhood. We don’t warrant favor from the powers-that-be at Barnes & Noble, and independent bookstores can’t thrive. Someone talked about the need for “third places” in our community, and proposed the library. I responded: Libraries… now there’s a subject I’m passionate about. Libraries are not what they could be. They are designed like municipal spaces,…
