Librarything’s Top 106 Unread Books

This afternoon’s work read was too boring for words. I picked this meme up from BookGal. These are the top 106 books tagged “unread” in Librarything. Why 106? Nobody knows…

The rules:
Bold what you have read, italicize books you’ve started but couldn’t finish, and strike through books you hated. Add an asterisk* to those you’ve read more than once. Underline those on your tbr list. Continue reading

100 Best Foreign Films as Chosen by People Like Me

aguirre1.jpgI recently participated in a project hosted by Eddie on Film, who I know from my old job as a film reviewer/blogger. He wanted to come up with a democratically chosen list of the best non-English language films, and sought nominations from a group of online and offline critics. I was one of them (thanks, Eddie!). Continue reading

I’ve decided to start a regular end-of-the-month round-up post, to feature the 5 most popular posts each month.

Books to Film (Booking through Thursday)

I’m putting this post up in honor of an adaptation project I’m working on right now. From Booking through Thursday:

1. In your opinion, what is the best translation of a book to a movie?
2. The worst?
3. Had you read the book before seeing the movie, and did that make a difference? (Personally, all other things being equal, I usually prefer whichever I was introduced to first.)

30 Books Some Folks in England Say To Read Before You Die

Like Poodlerat, I like lists. British librarians were asked to come up with a list of books adults should read before they die. Like all of these lists, it’s weird.

Books I’ve read are in bold; books I’ll almost certainly never read are crossed out. Continue reading

Emotional Reads

I like to be moved by literature, which is why I don’t go crazy for metafiction or postmodernism or overly intellectual fiction (Don DeLillo, Thomas Pyncheon, etc.). Such was the book I read yesterday for work.

Otter asks,

What are the five books in your library (or memory) that stirred the greatest emotive reaction in you?

What I mean is, what five (or more) books most brought you close to tears, laughter, anger, whatever?

10 Books I Can’t Live Without

I found this meme over at Bookfoolery and Babble, and heaven knows I love lists. These are the 10 books that form the backbone of my library, the 10 books with which I would never part, the 10 books that I will always reread at every stage of my life. That’s not to say that I could live without any books but these, but that I need these books to be me. Continue reading

Books That Go Unfinished

The BBC reported yesterday on the top books that go unread by Britons. I love that enough people actually thought they should read David Beckham’s autobiography in order to have it be the third most unfinished non-fiction book. I’ve bolded the ones that I’ve read for kicks. Continue reading

Harold Bloom’s Five Books vs. Mine

In Newsweek this week, literary critic Harold Bloom offers his list of the five books he’d take to the desert island with him. Touchstone Magazine’s blog has some intriguing commentary, and some fun lists in the comments.

I will not be bringing the 2nd of 3 books I read tonight for work, because it was by-the-numbers chick lit. The five books I’d bring to the stupid desert island are: Continue reading
