World Made By Hand by James Howard Kunstler

Synopsis: The world has moved on, thanks to climate change, a worldwide oil shortage, and population devastation from superbugs, and in one small corner of New York State, the world is being rebuilt by hand. Review: Anyone who spends much time with me will eventually learn that I am obsessed with The Long Emergency, one of World Made By Hand author James Kunstler’s non-fiction treatises. I have always been drawn to the apocalyptic, and now that I am a mother I can worry about the…

The Internet is Eating My Brain

I promise I used to have an attention span. And then I had a baby. I had all these high hopes of doing tons of reading while nursing. But I’m not, thanks to the internet. The day my daughter was born I set my laptop on the radiator cover right next to my nursing glider, where I have full access to the world wide web over WiFi. Thanks to the Boppy & a well placed ottoman, I can nurse and browse the web at the…

You Know I Love Libraries

I picked up this library meme from So Many Books. Of course, Library Lovers month ended on Friday but my heart is filled with library love year round, so get over it. How do you plan on celebrating Library Lovers month? I did nothing to celebrate. It’s all I can do to get a daily shower. I was actually going to go to the library two weeks ago. Superfast Baby and I went to Brooklyn to visit a friend and her two kids, and they…

Format (Booking Through Thursday)

All other things (like price and storage space) being equal, given a choice in a perfect world, would you rather have paperbacks in your library? Or hardcovers? And why? I prefer trade edition paperbacks, for the most part, because I do a lot of my reading on the subway, and hardcovers get really heavy and unwieldy. They’re also better for reading in bed, especially when they have to rest on a pregnant belly! I also tend to prefer the way that trade paperbacks look, mainly…

I’m tagging Alissa, Terri, Megan, Rhinoa, and Ian–or Ian’s dad Which book do you irrationally cringe away from reading, despite seeing only positive reviews? Michael Chabon’s The Yiddish Policemen’s Union. I was in the midst of a horrific breakup while reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, and I put it down halfway through and have not Chabonned since. In addition,…

Kindle–Why I Don’t Want One (But You Might)

At first blush, Amazon’s Kindle is ideal for someone in my situation. As a nursing mother of a tiny infant, I’ve got plenty of time to read, but the logistics of holding a book while holding Bean are posing quite a challenge. I can’t always get the perfect reading angle, and if I drop my book, I’m sure to lose my place. Furthermore, I’m re-reading lots of books on parenting (latest add: The Vaccine Book from the Sears Parenting Library). I don’t always have the…

Christmas Meme, from Book-a-rama— 1. What is your favorite Christmas romance to re-read each year? I don’t have one, unless you count the account in Luke. 2.
