Synopsis:
An American Girl-type doll company owner decides to buy a town, wreaking havoc in her wake.
Review:
This was satire without a heart. There was some strong bite, but it was cold and overly intellectual. Happy is a strong character, but she’s very hard to connect with, and this kept me at a remove so that I ultimately didn’t care. I also didn’t feel like he had a strong enough point of view about his targets of satire, or even a clear image of exactly who he was targeting.
Happyland was serialized in Harper’s. Visit J. Robert Lennon’s website.

FYI, here’s the real story (non-fiction).

It could be a great novel someday, but we’re still living it.
